About Growing Tomatoes

Growing your own tomatoes, and vegetables in general, is becoming more and more popular and it is no surprise. When you bite into a freshly picked tomato and experience a taste that can only be found in home-grown produce, you realise that much of the shop bought fruit and veg. is second rate for taste.

In the words of the song: “There’s only two things that money can’t buy – that’s true love and home-grown tomatoes” and it’s as true as ever, especially with a rise in the popularity of heirloom varieties that remind us of the old traditional tomato taste of yesteryear.

However, as the weather continues to change and we experience, in many areas of the world, both hotter and/or wetter periods, the outdoor tomato grower is faced with a number of challenges.

Tomato blight in particular, which is caused by prolonged periods of wet weather and blossom end rot caused by lack of calcium due to dry soil. Both of these have affected the efforts of many gardeners and continue to do so.

The plan is to stay ahead of potential problems and to try to avoid them before they happen.

For example, tomato blight can be avoided with protection from the rain and blossom end rot avoided with supplementary feeding and good watering practice … especially for plants in containers.

I hope that this website will provide much of the information needed to help  gardeners be successful in their efforts and experience the wonderful taste and joy of growing your own tomatoes.
